Janelle Groomes (she/her/hers) is a first-generation college student and Master of Social Work (MSW) intern at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She earned her Bachelor of Science from Buffalo State University, where she developed an interdisciplinary foundation in psychology, art therapy, nursing, and social work. Her educational background shaped her holistic approach to understanding the connection between emotional, psychological, physical, and social well-being.
Janelle brings experience supporting individuals and families through behavioral health services, developmental disabilities, care coordination, and community-based programs. These experiences have strengthened her passion for advocacy, person-centered care, and creating spaces where individuals feel valued, understood, and empowered.
Janelle is passionate about supporting adolescents navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, identity development, self-esteem concerns, and life transitions. She is particularly interested in psychodynamic therapy and exploring how relationships, past experiences, and emotional patterns influence the way young people understand themselves. Her background in art therapy also informs her belief that creativity and self-expression can be powerful tools for communication, healing, and growth.
As a Black woman and first-generation college student with lived experience navigating mental health challenges, Janelle values culturally responsive and affirming care. She is committed to reducing mental health stigma and creating a therapeutic space where adolescents feel safe, heard, and empowered to express their authentic selves.
Janelle believes adolescents deserve to have their voices heard and their experiences validated. She is honored to walk alongside young people as they recognize their strengths, process their experiences, and build a foundation for healing, self-acceptance, and meaningful growth.
Outside of her clinical work, Janelle enjoys spending time with her family, reading, painting, and engaging in activities that support creativity, balance, and personal wellness.
